RVW150 - A Message from Allen Prior

Ralph Vaughan Williams (RVW) was born on 12 October 1872 in the vicarage at Down Ampney, Gloucestershire. His father died when RVW was not yet three years old, and his mother moved the family (Ralph, his older brother and sister) to Leith Hill Place in Surrey. He moved from his birth county to mine. In 1973, I moved from Surrey to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, so I reversed his journey.

Two of my abiding passions are walking my adopted county of Gloucestershire and choral music, particularly the Three Choirs Festival, so I felt it appropriate to do one of them in support of the other.

I have decided to walk 150 miles in the month of October 2022 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth and to raise funds towards the 2023 Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, during which we will celebrate RVW’s music in great part.

I very much hope you will be able to join me so:

I have designed four walks ranging in length from 5 to 17 miles, where anyone can join me so we can all enjoy our collective convivial company while supporting a worthy cause. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (owners will be responsible).

If you look on the pages that detail the walks, the eagle-eyed and number-orientated among you will realise that the shared walks total only 42 miles – rest assured, I will walk to other 108 miles on my own, keeping a clear record of each walk.

All we need now is kind weather!

I hope to see many of you in the coming weeks. For more information and to book each walk, please visit the walk pages:
