As one of the more enigmatic improvising pianists working in the UK, Alexander Douglas has been operating across boundaries of music and ideas for over two decades. Tonight's concert will feature a series of Bach chorales and spirituals, inspired in part by Tippett's use of five spirituals as 'chorales' in A Child of Our Time. Bach's original chorale settings will serve as stimulus for improvisations in an African-American hybrid musical language encompassing the spirituals, gospel music and jazz which will then result in reconstructions of said chorales with the same melodies but somewhat altered harmonies/rhythms. Later, some African-American spirituals will be interpreted and brought into dialogue with Bach's harmonic oeuvre, along with new ‘hymns’ by African-American composers Cedric Dent and Wayne Hooper that also build on Bach’s chorale legacy in new and important ways.
