Darkness and light stand in stark contrast in this evocative recital from outstanding concert pianist Charles Owen, which includes a Festival commission from Cheryl Frances-Hoad. Threads of dark drama and dream-like moods are woven through the first half of the programme, from the sweeping passion of Schumann’s thrilling Sonata to the brooding intensity of Janáček’s In the Mists. In vivid contrast, the second half is full of light, warmth, and colour with Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s depiction of sparkling Alpine gems in Stones of the Sky and Schubert’s energetic, affirmative Wanderer-Fantasie.

Stones of the Sky was commissioned for the Three Choirs Festival by Penny Wright, Andrew Neubauer, and Sally Parkhouse
