Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël
Hubert Parry Ode on the Nativity
The Gloucestershire based chamber choir Sabrinensis will be performing at St Peter’s church, Newnham on Severn on Sunday 8th December at 7.30pm. With a reputation for imaginative programming combining readings with uplifting repertoire, Sabrinensis has performed at the Three Choirs Festival on two occasions to great acclaim. Their performances challenge, entertain, inspire and pack an emotional punch.
For their December concert, Sabrinensis are pairing two works - one written at the beginning of the composer’s career, the second towards the end.
Camille Saint-Saëns’s “Oratorio de Noël” was written for the Madeleine Church in Paris in two weeks when he was only 23 years old. The music overflows with charm and abundant melody, particularly in the movements for the five soloists. Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry wrote “Ode on the Nativity” to the extraordinary medieval text by William Dunbar in 1912, six years before his death; a work displaying all the rich musical complexity of a mature master choral composer.
Two works to delight and enthrall. A concert not to be missed.
