Samuel Hudson appointed Worcester Artistic Director

The Three Choirs Festival is delighted to welcome Samuel Hudson as its new Worcester Artistic Director. Sam will work with the festival’s chief executive to programme the 2020 festival in Worcester, which is delivered by a central management team liaising closely with the local city committee. He will also be appearing at the 2019 festival in Gloucester as the conductor and leader of the Three Choirs Festival Youth Choir, who this year perform Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man and give the UK premiere of Giles Swayne’s Our Orphan Souls, accompanied by Philharmonia Orchestra players.

Sam has recently been appointed as organist and director of music at Worcester Cathedral. He joins the team at Worcester from Blackburn Cathedral, where he has been director of music since 2011 and made a significant contribution to the development of the cathedral’s music education programme, as well as staging some imaginative events with the cathedral’s choirs.

Sam said: “I am thrilled to be taking on this exciting role following my recent appointment at Worcester Cathedral, and am very much looking forward to joining the Three Choirs Festival family. It is an immense privilege to have the opportunity to be involved in such a highly esteemed and vibrant festival – I can’t wait to get started!”

Of the appointment, Three Choirs Festival Association Chair Dr Timothy Brain said: “We’re absolutely delighted with Samuel Hudson’s appointment, and are looking forward tremendously to working with him.”

The newly-appointed Worcester Committee Chair, Ben Cooper, said: “It is wonderful news that Samuel Hudson has been chosen as artistic director for the festival in Worcester. Samuel’s enthusiasm and musicality shine and I am sure he will be a great custodian of this distinguished post.”

The festival is grateful to Sam’s predecessor in this role, Dr Peter Nardone, for his contribution to the last six festivals, two of which were hosted in Worcester (2014 & 2017).
