BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Performer entry
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) is Wales' flagship symphony orchestra, holding a unique dual role as both a national and broadcasting ensemble. Formed in various iterations since 1928 and officially named BBC NOW in 1993, it is one of the five professional BBC orchestras. Based at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, within the Wales Millennium Centre, the orchestra performs regularly across Wales, the UK, and internationally, including annual appearances at the BBC Proms.
BBC NOW champions Welsh composers and contemporary music alongside a broad classical repertoire. They frequently premiere new works and maintain strong links with the local musical community through education and outreach programs. The orchestra also boasts an extensive discography and is renowned for recording soundtracks for BBC television productions, including popular series like Doctor Who and natural history documentaries. Ryan Bancroft is the current Principal Conductor, continuing a tradition of nurturing international conducting talent.
