Welsh baritone Gareth Brynmor John, the 2013 Kathleen Ferrier Award winner, studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, where he received the Patrons’ Award. He furthered his studies at the National Opera Studio supported by the Royal Opera House. His Welsh National Opera début was as Schaunard (La Bohème) in 2017, and he has since sung numerous roles for the company including the title role in Eugene Onegin and Sharpless.

John’s operatic credits also include performances with Royal Academy Opera, Shadwell Opera, Amersham Festival, Wild Arts Opera, and English Touring Opera, creating roles in new works and appearing at festivals like Buxton and Anghiari. He recently performed in Opéra de Lille’s production of The Indian Queen.

A sought-after concert performer, Gareth has appeared with leading UK orchestras in works such as Elijah, Carmina Burana, and Handel's Messiah. He is also a respected lieder interpreter, giving recitals at prestigious venues and festivals. His recordings include Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen and critically acclaimed albums of Stanford and Champs Hill repertoire, with a Shostakovich recording forthcoming.
