Belshazzar’s Feast

Dramatic, thrilling, magnificent – the Festival is summed up in one concert of music sure to impress. Find yourself on the edge of your seat as you hear how a disembodied hand writes Belshazzar’s fate on the wall, sending him to his doom, accompanied by spine-tingling music performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Festival Chorus. Elgar’s dramatic first symphony was the culmination of more than ten years of planning and received a rapturous response from audiences at its premiere. This powerful piece will, in Elgar’s words, leave you with ‘a massive hope in the future’. Festival Associate Composer Gavin Higgins’ magnificent Fanfare Americana, a whirlwind of orchestra and brass, opens the programme.

We would like to thank The Elgar Society for making this performance of Elgar’s First Symphony possible, and for supporting performances of his works throughout the Festival
