About Oriana Singers | Spring Concert

Oriana Singers’ Spring Concert celebrates Beethoven in anticipation of the bicentenary of his death in 1827. Normally we realise that it’s a composer’s centenary too late to schedule his music into our concerts, so this year we thought we’d get in early. This is particularly important as the 250th anniversary of his birth was washed out by the Covid pandemic in 2020. We are featuring three of Beethoven’s late works, the Kyrie from the majestic Missa Solemnis, his exciting setting of Goethe’s poems “Meeresstille und Glueckliche Fahrt” (”Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage”), and the little-known “Elegischer Gesang”. Beethoven composed this last very touching piece in consolation for one of his friends whose young wife had recently died. We shall also perform Bach’s splendid Magnificat with 5 professional soloists, and conclude with Haydn’s rousing Te Deum, again a late work showing the composer at the height of his powers.
