Richard Lloyd - Recording of Early Works
TCF is delighted to be supporting a recording by David Hill, Musical Director of the Bach Choir and one of the country’s finest choral conductors, of Richard Lloyd’s choral work.
As Hereford Cathedral organist from 1966-74, Richard became immersed in the Three Choirs Festival, directing three Hereford festivals in 1967, 1970, and 1973, where he brought a freshness of ideas and approach to programming. On the final night of his first Festival, his performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius was distinguished by a now legendary team of soloists which included Janet Baker. The 1967 Festival also included an outstanding performance of the then rarely heard Mass no 3 in F Minor by Bruckner. Lloyd also brought new music to the TCF, commissioning or playing works from many contemporary composers, including John McCabe.
A prolific composer himself, Richard wrote over 1,000 pieces of music, predominantly choral and organ, described in Gramophone as “some of the most rewarding church music of our time”. We are recording some of his earlier works, a treasure trove of lovely, challenging and interesting music, including from Richard’s Hereford years.
We need help covering the substantial costs of recording many of these works for the first time. We are inviting donations via the Three Choirs Festival. All profits and royalties from the recording will fund future TCF events. All donations received before the end of this year will be matched by an anonymous supporter.
